The last week and a bit have been hard work. There has been a fair amount of rain which meant a little less garden watering. As the gardens are doing well the focus shifted to getting the second garden started for the August to December time frame. This second set will be mainly cold hardy plants but I’ve started some seeds now to get the less cold hardy one a couple month head start. Then there is the wood cutting project and its going well.
It is always nice to be able to start eating the garden. Here is a picture of some of the lettuce and kale I’ve washed and am about to have for lunch. Nothing better than just picked vegetables.
The gardens are doing very well so I’ve started focusing on planting some seeds in pots. Cold hardy plants like lettuce grow fast and will be able to be planted in August in the greenhouses. But other plants like tomatoes and green peppers will have less hope of making it through a frosty day. This means I really want to harvest these by the end of October. Back track 4 months and it means that the seeds must be started by very latest July. The problem is the first crops will still be in the ground. The solution is a small plastic green house, with pots and start planting now.
Behind the small greenhouse is a tarp under that is what is left of a truck load of mushroom and soil compost. I use this start the plants in the pots. This picture is a week or so old but there are a lot more plants in there today.
The wood splitting project is slow and painstaking! I used to cut the wood scoop the pieces in the bucket of the tractor and split and stack them. With the tractor out of service (hopefully I will find out what’s wrong this week ) I must carry the logs and dolly them to the splitter. I am certain it takes twice as long, I love hydraulics! In any event it is going well and by doing a chunk each day it will be ready before the fall and should last two to three years, here is a picture.
The saw dust is useful, I am using to cover the weeds in the outdoor garden update and the rest will go to the compost pile. Well that is pretty much the summary of this week just lots of work. Stay safe.
