The Covid-19 virus is taking its toll on most businesses and projects, even basic things like ordering wood is a task as all must be ordered in advance as all stores are closed to walk-in traffic.
Chickens
I ordered 5 birds to be delivered on September 9, as “ready-to-lay”. The birds cost three times the price as babies but none of the effort involved. As a first time chicken person I would rather get the adults. Additionally with all the other spring projects I have this will afford me time to build a proper chicken coop and run for them. My guess is that in about 2 months I will start the coop build.
Greenhouse number 1
The first greenhouse was planted just over a week ago and some of the plants are starting to pop their heads through the ground. In an ideal world this will allow me to start getting some vegetables in about 5 weeks from now, the second greenhouse will likely get planted next week, followed by the outdoor garden about a month from now.
Greenhouse number 2
The work on the second new greenhouse has been long and hard, but the work is coming along nicely. The metal frame is built, the ground levelled and a stone base put in. The first of two raised bed gardens has been built and by next week hopefully I am planting in it. I will publishing a post about the building of these greenhouses.
Outdoor garden
The outdoor garden is a mess. Two winters ago an early ice storm caused the bird netting over it to be torn down, breaking the thin wood frames supporting it. Additionally we chose not to plant it last year and give the ground time to rest. The weeds took over quickly so this spring we covered it in tarps to kill them. This garden will be my main focus by mid-May 2020.
CoronaVirus
I feel fortunate that my home is big enough to get out and do stuff as described above. I feel very sorry for people in the suburbs and apartments that do not have those choices. Soon this major disturbance to all our lives must end, in the meantime stay safe.
