Summary
This year we started early, early April that is. Many seedlings have been started for both the greenhouse and outdoor garden. At this time planting has only been started in the greenhouse, it will be another month or so before the outdoor gardens can be planted.
Starting the seedlings
Living off grid, big grow lights are a real burden to the energy system. I came across these full spectrum LED lights that only use 24 watts of power! That much power I can use! The lights have worked wonderfully well.
The other trick we found online was to reuse toilet paper centres instead of using peat moss pucks. These have worked out really well! You can see these in the picture above. They make moving the seedlings to a bigger pot much easier than the peat moss as well. Simply unfold the bottom, cut down the side and insert the plug into the new soil. All the little plants in this picture started that way.
The exception is the lettuce and celery that we replanted from store bought!
In the picture above you can see a few romaine lettuces that were cut and replanted as well as a celery plants that we did the same too. Its super easy to do and I’ll document it later. We did the same with carrots, but those are now out in the greenhouse.
On the bottom right, we have planted some healthy herbs as well, again a story for another day.
Looking forward to an awesome season! Hope you’ve got your seeds started as well. Have a great day.
