Covid-19, Economy and Food
The lasting effects of Covid-19 are starting to take place. While I truly do feel sorry for those that loose their lives to this virus, it is still a virus. Many others loose their lives to the regular flu, to cancer and suicide. The solutions that our governments are putting in place only deal with one virus and cause all others to loose ground.
The economy as we knew it is devastated, my understanding is about half the bars, restaurants and hotels will not likely make it through this. The number of people who have and/or will loose homes and jobs is huge. I read that depression is at an all time high and suicides are rising. While I don’t claim to have the answer to solving Covid-19 and the rest of the issues, I believe we must head towards the middle ground and start allowing those who can work to return to work and yes some will get sick and even a smaller percentage will die, but in my mind if you are going to be one of its victims you will be one, whether it is in 2 weeks or 2 years. In the meantime many other things could kill us so I believe re-opening the economy is a risk we must take.
The food producers have issued warnings about their ability to supply stores. This is not good and unlikely to end soon. Once food goes, so does the facade of calmness the people feel and social unrest is the likely result. Ok that’s my two cents. None of the above things are really in my sphere of influence so I focus on what I can do.
I grow my own food, both greenhouses are fully done! One is planted already with plants that are less cold sensitive but soon the rest will be as well. I have started to add decks to the front of the greenhouses and added a watering system that will use water collected from my roof drained to barrels near the greenhouses and outdoor garden. In order to provide sufficient water pressure I scrapped together some old 12 Volt parts, a water pump, battery and a 15 watt solar panel and build a system. I will show this is part two of the greenhouse build. That project is done and working but needs a little bit of tidying up to present well and look nice. However I’ll take use over looks anyday.
Well that’s all for this week, stay safe.
